Summary by Bob Ashby:

West jumped into the lead on the initial possession, scored the first six points of the game, and ended the first quarter up 18-10.  The Firebirds went into the intermission with a six  point advantage (29-23).  The Comets started the third period with a 2-13 scoring run putting them on top 31-36.  West  battled back to go up by six (49-43) with three minutes to play.  The Firebirds were still on top 52-48 with 1:22 remaining.  The Comets surged back yet again scoring with a trey and a 2pt. FG to retake the lead (52-53) with the time down to 28  seconds.  Mason held the lead as both teams traded pairs of FT’s in the last few seconds.  The afternoon’s high scorer was Lauren Cannatelli with16 followed closely by Danielle Wells with 14.  Wells was the games steals leader with 3.  The Firebird’s top rebounders were Elisabeth Carter and Arianne Whitaker both with 7.  Carter had a team high 3 assists and Whitaker a team high 3 shot blocks.

Game Summary by Bob Ashby: 

The Firebirds led at the end of every quarter except the one that counted, the fourth.  West was 2 up after one quarter, 7 up at the half, and 5 up after 3 quarters.  The Firebirds led by as many as 11 (28-17), with this maximum lead coming two minutes into the second half.  West’s last lead was 45-44 with 1:42 remaining in the game.  Middletown regained the lead 45-47 on a made trey with 1:24 left on the clock.  The Middies thwarted West’s comeback attempt by making 7 of 8 free throws in the final 44 seconds and getting the rebound from the one they missed.  Tyler Williams was the co-scoring leader in the game and the Firebird’s top scorer with 22 points which tied his personal best.  Malik Grove added 10 points to the West total.  Tyler Bowling was the teams rebounding leader with 12 boards (6 offensive & 6 defensive).

Lakota West Grad Alexis Rogers left ACC program (Duke) to transfer to Bowling Green. “I think after I got to Duke I realized that how big you go doesn’t matter if you’re not happy,” Rogers said. “The name across your jersey, it matters, but it doesn’t always matter. Especially because this was right after Elena Delle Donne was at UConn and left. So I was thinking to myself, not that we’re close or anything, but if she can make that decision — and she was all-everything — and she can go to a smaller school, it really doesn’t mean anything.”

Last Season, the Lakota West Boys Basketball Team won the inaugural LaRosa’s Royal 8 Hardwood Classic at Fairfield High School. This year they return to defend their title.  The Firebirds start the tournament on Friday, January 17th against Withrow at 6:30pm.

Rogers, a native of West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West H.S.), had a double-double as the Falcons opened the MAC schedule with a 62-50 win over Buffalo Saturday afternoon (Jan. 4) at the Stroh Center. Rogers had a game-high 22 points and a game- and career-high 17 rebounds in the victory, amassing those lofty totals in just 29 minutes.

McDonald’s today announced its list of 984 prep seniors who have been nominated to play in the 2014 McDonald’s All American Games. This year’s list boasts players from 44 states and the District of Columbia who have been selected by high school coaches, athletic directors, principals and members of the McDonald’s All American Games Selection Committee. Twenty six players hail from Greater Cincinnati – 22 male and four female players.
