The Lakota West baseball team only recorded six hits last night, but it was enough offense to squeak by Walnut Hills in a 2-1 victory behind some excellent pitching by Senior Jake Kates. The Firebirds move on to the OHSAA Sectional Finals next Thursday against the winner of #9 LaSalle and #20 Northwest. The game will be played 5pm at Princeton High School.
Kates held Walnut Hills to only five hits while also coming up one short of Nate Smith’s (’09) Lakota West School record with 13 strikeouts in the game. It was also Kates’ 6th complete game of the season. He currently has an 8-1 record with a 0.28 ERA for the season.
Neither team scored a run until the bottom of the 4th when the Firebirds played a little “small ball” to get a runner across the plate. The inning started when Brennen Martin led the inning with a basehit. Kates then walked in the next at bat. Senior Dominic Schivone set the stage when he laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing both Martin and Kates. Junior Michael Medley followed with a bunt of his own scoring Martin and advancing Kates. Senior Eric Hooper knocked a ground ball to the Walnut Hills shortstop who smartly threw out the lead runner at home. Junior AJ Petersen followed with a single scoring Medley for the final run scored for the Firebirds.
Walnut Hills threatened in the 7th when the 8-hole batter, Garrett Longeway led the inning with a base hit. The next batter hit a line drive out to leftfielder Brennen Martin. Kates walked the lead-off batter for his second walk of the game placing runners on first and second. Elijah Wales popped out to rightfielder Eric Hooper. Longeway scored when Adam Seal reached base on an error. With a possible winning run at bat, Kates stepped up once again and struck out Mike Sears for the win.
