What’s Cross Country All About?

Cross country meets are held in the fall. Ohio high school cross country courses are 3.1 miles (5 Kilometers) in length. A school may enter a maximum of seven runners in a race and their place of finish in the race is recorded. The place numbers of the first five runners on each school team are added together to produce a team score. The team with the best (lowest) team score is the race winner, the team with the second lowest total are the runner-ups, etc. In the event of tie scores the team’s sixth best runners are used as the tie breaker. Individual times are recorded for each runner, but are for reference only and have no bearing on the scoring. Individual awards are also typically given at meets. Cross Country blends aspects of both a team and an individual sports experience.

Coach Drumm welcomes any runners, ninth through 12th grades, to participate on the team.
The cross country team has no tryouts or cuts. All that participate in the prescribed team activities and who follow team rules are retained on the team. Meets begin after a late summer team conditioning and training period. Runners are assigned to different levels of competition at meets. Typically, for both boys and girls, there are varsity, junior varsity, and open races so all may get a chance to compete. A team roster member may be assigned to run in any one of these three races at a given meet and these assignment may change from week to week at the coaches discretion. As runners improve they may progress up to the highest level of competition, the varsity, irrespective of their grade in school.
Cross country is also a good way for athletes who compete in other sports in the winter and spring seasons to maintain top physical condition.
