Simone Henderson
Junior, Track & Field
Simone anchored an 800 meter relay team that made it all the way to the state finals at Columbus on Saturday.  For the year Henderson ran on two relay teams, 400 and 800, that turned in seven record breaking (school, school district, & meet) performances.  Earlier this year she set a new Lakota West 200 meter dash record improving on the previous record that had stood for over a decade.

Maya Andrews
Junior, Track and Field
Maya ran the third leg on an 800 meter relay team that made it all the way to the state finals at Columbus on Saturday.  For the year Andrews ran on two relay teams, 400 and 800, that turned in in seven record breaking (school, school district, & meet) performances.  She concluded her second season as an integral member of multiple record breaking relay teams.

Dante Jones
Senior, Track & Field
Dante competed in two events at the Southwest Ohio regional meet this week breaking a school record in one and qualifying for the state meet in the other.  On Wednesday he set a new Lakota West record (22′ 4.5″) in the long jump and on Friday he qualified for the State meet by finishing second in the 110 meter hurdles.  Earlier this year he set the Lakota School District record in the 110 hurdles.

Sydney Hill
Senior, Track and Field
Sydney became the first Lakota West female athlete to bring home a regional gold medal and did so by winning the 300 meter hurdle race.  Her winning time established a new Lakota School District record topping the previous record that had stood for 20 years.  Additionally she qualified for the state meet by taking the silver in the 100 meter hurdles, and also as a member of the Lakota West record setting 800 meter relay team.  Hill has now been part of tying or breaking records (school, school district & meet) in six consecutive meets.

Jeremiah Johnson
Senior, Baseball
Jeremiah drove in the winning run propelling West to a 2-1 victory over Northmont in the District Chamionship game at  Western Hills on Saturday.  In two tournament games this week Johnson, the teams first baseman, went 2/5 at the plate, with a double, driving in two runs and scoring one himself.  So far this season he is leading the team in both batting average with .421 and runs batted in with 25.

Sydney Hill
Senior, Track and Field
Sydney led the girls track team to a District Championship at Winton Woods this week, Lakota West’s first ever District Championship in track and field.  By winning both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles races Hill scored 20 points, more than the Firebirds 14.5 point margin of victory over the second place team, St. Ursula.  Her times in both hurdles races tied her own school and school district records.  She also ran a leg on the winning 800 meter relay team who’s time tied the meet record.

Dante Jones
Senior, Track & Field
Dante was Lakota West’s only male champion, and the Firebird’s only male athlete to earn all GMC honors in as many as three events at this weeks Greater Miami Conference Championship Track and Field Meet.  He won the long jump, finished second in the 110 meter hurdles, and was a member of the third place 800 meter relay team.  Earlier in the year Jones set a new Lakota school district record in the 110 high hurdles breaking a record that had stood for twenty two years.

Ashley Cummins
Senior, Softball
Ashley was West’s leading hitter in the Firebirds first round tournament win over Beavercreek on Wednesday. She had three hits in four at bats including  a double, drove in two runs, and scored a run.  Cummins, a four year varsity infielder, is already among the Firebirds all-time top ten in career runs batted in, runs scored, and home runs, and is on pace to finish in the top ten in career batting average.  Her success at the plate this week raises her batting average to .381 for the current season.

Sydney Hill
Senior, Track and Field
Sydney was named ‘Girls Runner of the Meet’ at this weeks Greater Miami Conference Championship Track and Field Meet.  She is the first Lakota West athlete, male or female, to ever win a GMC runner of the meet award.  Hill participated in the 100 meter high hurdles, the 300 meter low hurdles, the 400 meter relay, and the 800 meter relay recording an unmatched total of four first place finishes.

Alex Wagner
Senior, Baseball
Alex was the starting pitcher and winning pitcher in two Greater Miami Conference  games this week, first against Fairfield on Monday, and then over Oak Hills on Friday.  These two decisions upped his won-loss record to a perfect 7-0 for the season.  All seven of his wins came against GMC opponents helping the Firebirds to achieve a second consecutive conference championship in baseball.  At weeks end Wagner was the winningest pitcher in the GMC.

Anna Szolwinski
Freshman, Track and Field
Anna laid claim to the title ‘Fastest Female Firebird Of All Time’  by setting a new Lakota West record in the 100 meter dash.  The record came at the Rod Russell Invitational held at Mason on Friday.  Her time of 12.78 seconds was good for third place in this major meet attended by 28 other teams and topped the previous West record that had stood for fifteen years.  Szolwinski had a productive week also placing at the Mason meet in the 200 meter dash, winning the 100 dash on Tuesday at the Kings Invitational, and running legs on two sprint relay teams at both meets.

Austin Allinger
Senior, Baseball
Austin used both his arm and his bat to lead the Firebirds to a critical 1-0 win over Fairfield on Friday.  He pitched a complete game, 2 hitter, for the win and drove in the winning run with a double for a victory that was needed to keep West in first place in the league standings.  Allinger fanned 10 and at weeks end was tied for the GMC lead in total strike outs with 41.  Earlier in the week he contributed to two wins over Middletown as a designated hitter and second baseman.

Madeline Kurtz
Senior, Softball
Madeline was credited with four pitching wins in a five day span, all against teams in the top five of the Greater Miami Conference (GMC) standings.  Wins two and three in this streak came against  Lakota East  on back to back evenings and vaulted the Firebirds past the Thunderhawks in the GMC standings.  By weeks end Kurtz had raised her strikeout total to a league leading 127 and was also the winningest pitcher in the conference with 12 positive decisions.

Mykel Chambers
Senior, Track and Field
Mykel swept the sprints, winning the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes, at the Springboro Invitational meet on Friday.  Chambers left runners from 17 schools in his wake as he became the first Lakota West runner to ever win three individual races in the same meet.  He was also the highest scoring athlete in this years Springboro Invitational.

Sydney Hill
Senior, Track and Field
Sydney lowered her own Lakota school district record in the 100 meter hurdles en route to a win over girls from 19 schools at the Springboro Invitational Friday.  Her time of 14.84 ranks among the top 15 in the history of Southwest Ohio track competition.  By also finishing third in the 300 meter hurdles and contributing to the the winning 800 meter relay team, Hill amassed enough points to account for West’s the margin of victory as they won the team championship.

Andrew Huser
Senior, Baseball
Andrew drove in six runs in the 13-1 win at Mason on Monday that gave Lakota West a share of the GMC lead. He then drove in the winning run in a 2-1 extra inning win over Lakota East on Tuesday, and brought home yet another run in a win over Princeton on Friday.  Huser hit safely in the first four games of the week getting seven hits including two doubles and a triple.

Kaylin Sabo
Senior, Lacrosse
Kaylin scored seven of Lakota West’s eleven goals staking the Firebirds to a five goal win over Mercy on Wednesday.  Sabo had been the team scoring leader or co-leader in four previous games this season and leads the team with19 goals for the year to date.

Dante Jones
Senior, Track and Field
Dante led the Firebirds boys track team in scoring at this weeks Cincinnati Coaches Classic meet held on Thursday and Friday.  Jones had the teams highest finish, a second in the long jump, as well as a third in the 110 meter high hurdles.  He jumped 21′ 6.5″ in the long jump missing first place in this 28 school competition by a scant 2.5 inches.  Jones will be Lakota West’s only male athlete to earn as many as three varsity sports letters this year; football, basketball, and now track & field.

Logan Porter
Junior, Track and Field
Logan set a new Lakota West girls shot put record while competing in the Cincinnati Coaches Classic meet on Thursday and Friday.  On Thursday Porter bettered a West record that had stood for 12 years and also earned her way into the meet finals which were held on Friday.  In the finals she raised the record again improving it by eleven inches to 35′ 7″  over the two days.  Porter finished the meet in fourth place in the shot out of a field of 49 girls that began the competition.

Jacob Kates
Sophomore, Baseball
Jacob’s performances on the pitching mound contributed to two wins this week as the Firebirds get out to a 4-0 season start. Kates came into the game in the 7th inning to record a save over Sycamore on Wednesday and came back as the starting pitcher to earn a win over West Carrollton on Saturday.  He fanned 8 batters in six innings of work while allowing only one run.

Marisa Brown
Senior, Softball
Marisa hit the 15th and 16th homeruns of her career this week to tie the Lakota School District all-time record for round trippers.  Both came on Monday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in successive games against Riverdale and Beech high schools.  Back home on Saturday she hit a double against Mt. Notre Dame Academy extending her hitting streak to five consecutive games.

Josh Oeters
Senior, Track and Field
Josh was the Lakota West track team’s highest scorer Saturday as the Firebirds won the Tiger Invitational Meet hosted by Withrow High School.  Oeters won the 3200 meter run, ran the anchor leg for the winning 3200 relay team, and was runner-up in the 1600 run.

Allie Cummins
Freshman, Softball
Allie, playing in the Firebirds two season opening games at Murfreesboro Tennessee,  hit 4 for 7 including 3 doubles.  As the lead off hitter and shortstop she had two doubles, scored two runs, stole third, and started an inning ending  double play in the season opening win over White House Co., Tennessee.  Cummins had the teams only hit in the proceeding game to spoil a no-hitter.  Her softball exploits came just seven days after she had appeared in the State Championship basketball game.

Lexi Wasan
Junior, Basketball
Lexi’s performances in this week’s final four tournament games at the Ohio State Universities Schottenstein  Center lifted the Firebirds to the Division I girls basketball championship. She led West in scoring, rebounding, and shot blocking in both the final game and cumulatively for the two games.  She accomplished these marks while being paired on successive nights against post players who were co-Ohio D-1 players of the year, both signed to play at division I colleges (Kym Royster-Indiana University and Kaayla McIntyre-Toledo University), and who had four inch height advantages with each standing 6′ 2″ tall.  Wasan had to play primarily without the aid and support of the Firebirds tallest and most experienced post player who was unavailable for much of the first game and all of the final game due to injury.

Congratulations to all of this winter’s  boys and girls athlete of the week honorees.  Winter sports have now been concluded for the 2014-15 school year.  The spring season will soon be in full swing and our spring athlete of the week selections are coming soon.

Nia Staples
Junior, Basketball

Nia came off the bench to score 20 points in the win over McAuley on Wednesday, propelling the Firebirds into the Regional Finals.  This tied her personal single game high and came on perfect shooting of nine for nine from the field, including a trey, and one for one from the free throw line.  On Saturday, again off the bench,  she contributed 11 points in a 9 point win over Mt. Notre Dame in the Regional Finals.

Danielle Wells
Junior, Basketball
Danielle scored a team high 16 points leading West to the Regional Championship win over Mt. Notre Dame at Fairmont’s Trent Arena on Saturday.   In the fourth quarter she scored 9 points,  2 more than the whole Mt. Notre Dame team combined.  Wells, a 5′ 7″ guard,  remarkably led the the Firebirds in rebounding in both of these games getting 10 boards in the first and 8 in the second.

Andrew Acuna
Junior, Wrestling

Andrew tied for the highest placing West finish, fifth, in the Southwest Ohio district meet held at Fairmont this weekend.  Acuna’s four wins at the district meet raised his season total to a Firebird team best 36 for the 2014-15 season.

Danielle Wells
Junior, Basketball
Danielle led the Firebirds with 7 assists as they won a District Championship at Harrison on Saturday.  Wells played in two tournament games this week and was one of two West players to score in double figures in both (10 points in each).  On Saturday she raised her season assist total to 82 one short of the Lakota West school record.

Logan Brown
Senior, Wrestling

Logan won the 126 pound sectional championship title at the Centerville 2 sectional meet on Saturday.  He was the only Firebird to win an individual championship and led the effort to secure the team championship for Lakota West.  Brown tore through the opposition winning with two major decisions by scores of 19-5 and 12-2 and then by pinning his opponent in 1:08 for the championship win.

Abby Prohaska
Freshman, Basketball
Abby led the Firebirds in both scoring with 21 points and steals with 4 as Lakota West swept by Withrow at Lakota East on Thursday to advance in tournament play.  The 4 steals raised her season total to 81 and past the previous Lakota West single season record that had stood since 2003.

Chase Kaiser
Senior, Basketball

Chase, had a career best night to carry West to a one point win at Hamilton on Tuesday, and was a key contributor in the Firebirds senior night win over Princeton on Friday.  In the Hamilton game Kaiser shot a perfect five for five from the field, including two treys, and two for two from the foul line.  He was the leading rebounder of the game at Hamilton and was one of the Firebird’s  rebounding leaders as they dominated the boards in the Princeton win.

Neve Rice
Junior, Swimming
Neve qualified for the state meet in two events (100 yard and 200 yard free style)  this Sunday while competing in the Southwest Ohio district meet at Miami University.  She was the only Firebird, boy or girl, to advance to the state in two individual events.  Additionally she set a new Lakota school district record in the 200 free topping the old record mark that had stood since 1999.

Aaron Edwards
Senior, Wrestling
Aaron had the most success of the senior wrestling contingent as they celebrated Senior Night with a win over Harrison at the Main Street Arena on Thursday.  He dominated his opponent with a 16-1 technical fall to win the 152 pound class bout.   This win came just five days after Edwards earned all conference honors by finishing third in the 152 pound division at the Greater Miami Conference  championship tournament.

Erica Morris
Sophomore, Swimming
Erica had the highest finish of any Lakota West swimmer at the Mason sectional meet Saturday.  She won runner-up honors in the 100 yard butterfly stroke competing against swimmers from nine schools .   The fly was just one of four events that Morris competed in.  She qualified to advance from the sectional to  the district meet in all four.  Morris was also the co-leading scorer on the Firebird team.

Tim Tanner-Blair
Tim Tanner-Blair
Junior, Wrestling
Tim was one of just four Firebirds to finish as high as second place in the GMC championship meet held this Saturday at Lakota East.  He just missed winning the 285 pound championship by the narrowest of margins, losing 16-14 in overtime.  Tanner-Blair was dominant in the two matches leading to the finals winning the first by pin in 17 seconds and the second by pin in 1:14.  His strong showing helped boost the team to a second place finish in the meet.

Neve Rice

Neve was the only Firebird, boy or girl, to finish as high as second place in the GMC championship meet held this Saturday at Mason.  Rice earned points as well as All GMC honors  in three other events helping to to lift the Lakota West girls swim team to a third place finish.

Sean McCracken
Senior, Swimming
Sean won the 500 yard free style race at the Sycamore Tri-meet on Tuesday.  His winning time was the fastest that had been recorded by anybody on the West swim team so far this season.  In addition to the 500 free McCraken has now turned in the best time for the Firebirds in the 100 free, 200 free, 100 back, and the 200 individual medley.

McKenzie Rice
Freshman, Swimming
McKenzie was the only Lakota West girls individual winner at the Mason Tri-meet on Friday.  She won the 500 yard free style race in the best time that had been recorded by a female Firebird this season.  In addition to winning the 500 free Rice placed,3rd in the 50 free and swam on two third place relay teams to add a team high 15 points to the West scoring total.

Drew Fenton
Junior, Wrestling
Drew was the only Firebird to win an individual championship at the James Horning Memorial tournament hosted by Mason on Saturday.  Fenton won all five of his matches to claim the 195 pound championship title.  Wrestlers from ten schools competed in this tournament.

Lauren Cannatelli
Senior, Girls Basketball
Lauren helped the Firebirds win three important games this week by leading them in cumulative  scoring, assists, and steals.  She was the scoring leader with 23 in a win over Solon that vaulted the Firebirds into the State AP top 10.  She then led the team in assists and steals in a win over Mason to put West in first place alone in the GMC and finally she  led the team in scoring in a win over Middletown.

Senior, Wrestling
Andy, reached and exceed the 100 career win milestone at Saturday’s Lakota Duals Wrestling event held in the Main Street Arena.  Cress picked up his 99th win by pinning an opponent from Wayne, got his milestone 100th by major decision against Springboro, and finally raised his total to 101 with a win over Oak Hills.  The two pins elevated his career pins total to 53 and a tie for third place on the Firebird all-time career pin list.

Mikayla Brown

Mikayla was the winner of the 1 meter diving event at the Milford Tri-meet on on Tuesday. This win follows by only four days her win in the twelve team  Milford Invitational meet where she set a new Lakota West record with a six dive score of 249.75.

Mason Quinn
Senior, Wrestling
Mason won the 182 pound match to help Lakota West defeat Lakota East in the annual Cross District Rivalry meet held at East onThursday. His decisive major decision (16-3) came at the meet miid point (match 7)  and effectively dashed the Hawks chances for a team win.  This was Quinn’s 13th victory of the season and places his name firmly at the top of the current Greater Miami Conference 182 pound class win list.

Lauren Cannatelli
Senior, Girls Basketball
Lauren led the Firebirds in scoring at home against Hamilton on Wednesday and again at Sycamore on Friday.  She had game high’s of 17 points in each contest.  Earlier in the year Cannatelli became just the third Firebird girl to top 1,000 career points.  This week she raised her career total to 1,132 points and moved up to second place on the Lakota West girls  all time scoring list.

Logan Brown
Senior, Wrestling
Logan won the 126 pound championship at the eight team Beavercreek Classic Invitational on Saturday.   He dominated the final match winning with a 16-0 technical fall to bring home the Firebirds only Classic championship.  He now has 11 wins for the season, the most in the 128 pound division of the Greater Miami Conference.

Erika Lindner
Junior, Swimming
Erika won both the 200 yard free style and 100 yard breast stroke events in a dual meet at Oak Hills on Saturday.  She was the only Firebird female to win two events in this meet.  Her winning time of 2:13.00 for the 200 free was a new 2014-15 season best for the Lakota West girls team.

Jacob Biehle
Junior, Basketball
Jacob was had game highs, for points, rebounds, and steals against Beavercreek at Fairmont on Friday.  Biehle scored half of the Firebirds points (27 of 54), had half the teams steals (4 of 8), and collected nearly half the teams rebounds (7 of 16) in this game.   His 27 points is a new career personal best and raises his per game average to 14.7, currently 5th best in the GMC.

Lexi Wasan
Junior, Basketball
Lexi was the Firebirds leading scorer in both games played in the Kemba Classic Holiday Hoops Festival Tournament held at Lakota West this weekend.  On Saturday in the win over Toledo Central Catholic she registered a team leading and a c personal best 16 points.  Wasan followed that with a team best 10 points against Alter on Sunday.  In addition she had a career personal best 9 rebounds in Saturday’s game.

Mitch Webber
Junior, Basketball
Mitch playing in two varsity games this week led the Firebirds in both points scored (29) and shot blocks (3).  In West’s win at Middletown on Friday Webber was the team’s scoring co-leader with 15 and  the high rebounder of the game with 11.  Earlier in the week he led the team at Lakota East with 14 points and 3 shot blocks.

Neve Rice
Junior, Swimming
Neve placed in three events at the Canton Christmas Invitational Saturday.  Competing against swimmers from over 20 other schools Rice finished 7th in the 100 yard free style, 12th in the 50 yard free style, and swam a leg on the 8th place 400 yard relay team.  This was the highest combination of finishes achieved in this meet  by any member, boy or girl, on the Lakota West team.

Jacob Biehle
Junior, Basketball
Jacob was the high scorer tallying 17 points as West beat Colerain Friday, to give the Firebirds their first win of the season. Biehle was the teams leading scorer in both games played this week having been credited with 13 points against Fairfield on Tuesday.  He has now been the teams leading or co-leading scorer for three consecutive games.

Abby Prohaska
Freshman, Basketball
Abby was awarded Player Of The Game honors at the Mercy Health Tip Off Classic game hosted by Lakota West on Wednesday.  Prohaska led the team in scoring (14), steals (7), and assists (4) as the Firebirds recorded a decisive 64-44 win over Princeton.  Prohaska contributed 11 points in Saturday’s road win at Middletown.  For the two games played this week she was the team leader in steals with 8, and the Firebirds second leading scorer with 25.

Ben Pawlukiewicz

Ben won two individual events, the 200 yard individual medley, and the 100 yard breast stroke at the Turpin Tri-meet on Thursday at Keating Natatorium. Pawlukiewicz added points by swimming in two in two relay events finishing as  the highest scoring Firebird and the second highest scoring swimmer in the meet.

Arianne Whitiker
Senior, Basketball
Arianne played in three road games this week and had the Firebirds high cumulative totals for scoring, rebounding, and shot blocking. She was team co-scoring leader with 13 points in the loss to Mt. Notre Dame, the rebounding leader or co leader in all three games with a high of  10 to complete the double-double at Mt. Notre Dame, and was credited with all 7 of the teams shot blocks tallying one or more in each of the three contests.

Fall Sports

The Fall sports season has been concluded. Congratulations to the 13 athletes who received Athlete of the Week honors over the past 16 weeks. (See the Past Athletes Of The Week Tab above for their names, photo’s and achievements).  Winter Athlete of the week selections are scheduled to begin next week as the basketball and swimming teams begin competition. Blake Darland
Senior, Football

Blake passed for a game high 203 yards against Wayne in Saturday’s football regional finals at Welcome Stadium.  Darland’s leadership at the quarterback position was crucial in enabling the Firebirds to make their deepest penetration in the football playoffs in Lakota School district history.  Darland registered his sixth 200 yard plus passing night of the season and raised his record single season passing total to 2595 yards.

Winter Sports
The girls are now preparing to launch the winter sports season and will be back in action soon. Girls Athlete Of The Week selections will resume with the week ending December 7 after winter sports get underway.

Zelwyn Robinson
Sophmore, Football
Zelwyn was the Firebird’s leading rusher in West’s historic State Playoff round of 16 win over Lakota East at Mason on Saturday.  He gained 108 yards in 14 carries.  In so doing Robinson gained the distinction of being the first player in the eighteen year history of Lakota West football to have had 100 yard games both as a receiver and as a rusher.  He had had 133 yards as a receiver in the first game of the season and reached the century mark as a rusher for the first time in this weeks win over East.

Mykel Chambers
Senior, Football
Mykel used his speed to leave Elk tacklers in his wake as he gained 116 all-purpose yards and scored the go ahead  touchdown in West’s 21-15 win over Centerville at Centerville in the opening round of the state playoffs.  Chambers was credited with the longest punt return of the game (21 yards), the longest pass reception of the game, a 43 yarder resulting in the go ahead touchdown, and also the longest kickoff return of the game (54 yards).

Devin Pearson
Senior, Football
Devin, a defensive lineman, was a key contributor in the Firebirds 24-7 win over Lakota East, a win which earned West a spot in the playoffs.  Pearson was credited with a fumble recovery, a sack, and six tackles.   He was cited by the coaching staff as having led the charge that enabled West’s defenders to tally a season high 13 tackles for loss.  As a result the East offense was held  to a meager 103 yards, 247 below the 350 yard per game average they had maintained through the first 9 games of the season.

Jack Nguyen
Senior, Soccer
Jack placed his name in the scoring column in two sports, soccer and football, this week.  Playing in the district soccer tournament on Monday Nguyen assisted on the second of West’s two goals against Lakota East which resulted in sending the game into overtime.  On Friday Nguyen donned the football pads and kicked a field goal to account for 3 of West’s 5 points at Fairfield.  The soccer assist was his 8th of the season tying for team leadership in that stat.  So far this football season he’s made three for three kicking football field goals and 21 of 21 kicking extra points.  Nguyen has achieved these stats even though he missed several weeks in mid season with a leg injury.

Megan Kaufman
Sophomore, Volleyball
Megan, and the West girls volleyball team, concluded their season on Saturday having reached the District Tournament finals (state final 32).  Kaufman, a Libero, ends the season as the digs leader for not only the Firebirds, but the Greater Miami Conference. Now, having just completed her sophomore season, she becomes only the second player in Firebird history to tally over 1000 digs in a career.

Jake Mutlu
Senior, Soccer
Jake, playing the goal keeper position, was credited with a shutout in West’s first round tournament win over Milford at Lakota West stadium on Thursday.  Mutlu directed the defense in the 3-0 win over the Eagles and was called on to make 3 saves.  This was his third shutout in the past four games and his fifth of the season.

Senior, Soccer
Evie, a midfielder, had the highest scoring individual game of the season (3 goals, 1 assist) in West’s first round tournament win over Mercy at Lakota West stadium on Tuesday.  Her four scoring plays more than accounted for the margin of victory over the Bobcats.  At seasons end Stepaniak was the Firebird’s team scoring leader with 28 points (12 goals, 4 assists) and team co-leader in goals scored.

Christian Lytle
Senior, Soccer
Christian has been one of the Firebirds top defenders for the past three seasons, but was never more dominant that in the 3-0 shutout win over nationally ranked and hitherto unbeaten Mason on Tuesday.  Lytle’s success in repeatedly turning Mason attacks into Firebird counter attacks earned post game accolades from his coaches and teammates alike.

Junior, Cross Country
Kelly  ran a season best 19:33 and was the first Firebird across the finish line at the Greater Miami Conference Championship meet held a Voice of America Park on Saturday.  Her ninth place overall finish earned McManus all GMC First Team individual honors for a second consecutive year.

Kole Gentry
Senior, Football
Kole scored five touchdowns in Friday’s 49-14 win over Middletown.  His 30 point total tied the Lakota West single game scoring record, a record that was  set in 2001 and which had never since been equalled .  All five scores came on rushes as Gentry racked up a personal best  215 yards on the ground. He also led the team in pass reception yardage with 49.

Sharon Danquah
Senior, Tennis
Sharon won the runner-up medal at the Dayton Sectional championship tournament this week and will advance to next weeks’ Southwest Ohio District tournament.  Danquah won four of five matches to finish second in the field of 39 singles players who competed on Thursday and Friday.  This years qualification to the District tournament will be the second of her career.

C. J. Stalker

C. J. made a game leading 11 tackles Friday night against Colerain.  Eight of his tackles were solo efforts, and one was for West’s only sack of the night.  Stalker has now moved up to the 9th spot on the Lakota West career list of all-time leading tacklers  and is positioned to move several spots higher before the seasons end.

Lexi Duello

Lexi, had a team and game high 17 kills in Lakota West’s senior night, four set, win over the Sycamore Aviators on Tuesday.  Duello, coming back from early season injuries posted the highest Firebird single night kill total of the season in Tuesday’s game.

Kole Gentry

Kole ran for three touchdowns in Lakota West’s 27-24 win at Middletown on Friday in the GMC season opener.  He rushed for two of these TDs in the fourth quarter to bring the Firebirds from 10 points down to a 3 point win.  Gentry was credited with 215 yards of total offense consisting of a game high 165 yards rushing and 50 yards receiving.

Evie Stepaniak

Evie scored a goal to provide the margin of victory in Lakota West’s 2-1 win over Fairfield at the Steve Cummins Soccer Park on Tuesday.  For Stepaniak, an attacking midfielder, this was her fifth goal of the season and marked the second time this season where she had contributed to a game winning score.

Jake scored the winning goal in a 2-1 win over Middletown on Thursday.  He also assisted on the first goal of the Middletown game.  King contributed to a team leading four scoring plays during the week coupling two assists in the win over Colerain on Tuesday with his assist and goal at Middletown.  These two wins keep the Firebirds in the thick of the GMC championship race.

Sophomore, Cross Country
Meredith led the Firebirds to the championship of the Alliance Running Invitational hosted by Northmont H.S. on Saturday.  Elstun finished  7th in a field of 112 runners as West won the first place team trophy over 15 other schools. This was the second meet this season in which Elstun had the teams best time and she has finished in the top two in all four meets this fall.

Walt Zellner
Freshman, Soccer
Walt scored three goals in the Firebirds’  5-1 win at Turpin on Saturday.  He scored the first two goals of the game as well as the last to complete the ‘Hat Trick’.  His ‘Hat Trick (three goal game)‘ was the first ever credited to a freshman Lakota West boys soccer player.  After five games Zellner leads the team in scoring with 7 points.

Ashley scored a team leading two goals in the Firebirds 6-0 win in the GMC season opener at Princeton on Tuesday  and scored the teams only goal at Turpin on Thursday.  After five games she leads the team in scoring with 8 points.

Blake Darland

Blake threw a school record 5 TD’s and ran the ball for a 6th TD leading West to a 46-43 win over Loveland in the season opener at Miami University on Friday.  Darland became the first player in the 56 year history of Lakota District football to pass for over 300 yards in a single game.  His final total of 356 yards topped the previous record of 299 yards set by John Shivner, Lakota, in 1975.

Emily was the medalist in West’s one stroke dual match win over Hamilton on Tuesday.  She was runner-up for medalist honors in Thursdays quad match hosted by Sycamore trailing the medalist by just two strokes with a 4 over par 40 and leading the Firebirds to a second place finish.

Josh finished 4th out of 154 runners at the Finishtiming XC Classic on Saturday at Wilmington College.  He led the Firebirds to a 3rd place finish in this 22 school meet. Oerter ran the 5K distance in an outstanding early season time of 16:57 finishing less than six seconds out of the lead.

Gloria finished 4th out of 85 runners at the Finishtiming XC Classic on Saturday at Wilmington College. She led the Firebirds to a 2nd place finish in this 13 school event as she covered the 5K distance in 19:32 to post the teams first sub 20 minute time of the season.

Chase led the Firebirds in scoring in three out of four events this week. His team leading two over par 74 at the Centerville Invitational on Thursday was also his all time personal best while competing for Lakota West.

Abby was the medalist in the Colerain Dual meet on Wednesday.  She was also the leading scorer for West in two of three events this week, and had the teams low cumulative stroke total for the week.  Her score of 83 at the Fairfield Invitational on Monday was her personal best while competing as a Firebird.

Chase finished among the leaders at the 21 team Indian Hill Invitational played at the Hamilton Elks golf course on Friday.  He carded a three over par 75, just two strokes out of first place.  Martini played in three events this week and has a team leading eighteen hole average of 79.33.

Emily led the Firebirds in scoring in all three of the invitational tournaments they competed in this week.  Now in her second varsity season Worpenberg’s  83 at the Middletown Invitational in West’s season opener was a new personal best for her while in a Lakota West uniform.
