Lakota West thanks East for mental reset for postseason

The Lakota West Firebirds might have, of all teams, arch-rival Lakota East to thank for their run to the Division I Cincinnati regional tournament.

Lakota West was riding a five-game winning streak and already had clinched the Greater Miami Conference championship before being pummeled at home, 15-2, by the Thunderhawks in the regular-season finale. Firebirds coach Greg Leurck points out that it was Senior Day and he used some upperclassmen who didn’t see a lot of playing time during the regular season as well as five pitchers who needed tuning up for the tournament, but senior pitcher Jacob Kates still believes the outcome served as a reset for him and his teammates.
