Game Summary by Bob Ashby
Fairmont HS, Kettering, OH- March 8, 2017- Regional Semi-Final (rd. of 16) After 4 ties and six lead changes it came down to a final long Firebird desperation shot falling short as the final buzzer sounded leaving the Comets ahead by a single point. The Comets started the second half with a 3 point lead (18-21) and maintained the lead until the end of the game stretching it to 8 points near the end of the third period. The Firebirds scored five points in the last 12 seconds of the third quarter on Ally Haar and Jasmine Ballew two and three point field goals respectively to whittle the Comet lead back down to 3 (29-32). The margin tightened further when an Abby Prohaska driving layup with 16 seconds left set what proved to be the final score at 43-44. A scrambling Firebird defense forced two Mason turnovers in the waning seconds but West could not convert either opportunity into points. Abby Prohoska was the high scorer of the game with 13 points followed by Jasmine Ballew with 10. Madisyn Oxley, one of the shortest players on the court at 5′ 6″ was the leading rebounder for the Firebirds and the co-leading rebounder in the game with 10 hard won boards.
