Lakota West 56 Fairfield 55 2OT (Link to Box Score)
Game Summary by Bob Ashby
This game was a forty minute battle of wills that saw 13 ties and 16 lead changes before it was settled. With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter Frank Schmitt, West’s leading scorer from last week, scored a basket for his first points of the game to tie the score at 40-40 before both teams stalled on that number. With 8 seconds remaining in regulation a Fairfield senior went to the free throw line with a chance to win the Indian’s senior night game and missed. The same senior made two free throws to open the first overtime period but that proved to be too late. Fairfield’s senior night turned into Lakota West’s senior night as Cameron Anzer and Frank Schmitt took charge of the game. Anzer hit a trey and two free throws to account for all of West’s first OT scoring but former Firebird Devonte Ross hit a long three to tie the score at 45-45 with 12 seconds remaining to send the game into a second OT. Fairfield opened the scoring in the second OT period with a Ross two point field goal but it was soon matched by a Schmitt field goal. Anzer finally put the Firebirds ahead to stay by making a trey and a finger roll driving layup to set the score at 54-53. Schmitt added two insurance free throws with 24 seconds to go and they proved to be needed as the Indians scored a putback goal at the final horn. Anzer was the leading scorer in the game with 22 points, 10 in overtime. He hit on 8 of 10 from the field including all four of his three point attempts and added two for two at the charity stripe. Spencer Farthing chipped in with a personal best game of 12 points. Schmitt added 8 points, all coming in the game’s final 10 minutes, and was the games assist leader with 5. Bash Wieland led the Firebirds in rebounding with 7 and also added 7 points. The West starters, Will Nguyen, Schmitt, Farthing, Wieland, and Anzer all logged over 32 minutes on the court.
